EuroNews

EuroNews is an international chain of information diffusing simultaneously in 7 languages (German, English, Spanish, French, Italian, Portuguese, Russian).

History of the chain

Created in 1992 and launched on January 1st, 1993 by a consortium of 11 European chains of the public service (of which France Televisions, the SPOKE, and the RTVE), all members of the UER (European Union of radio-television), EuroNews is the first multilingual service of television news in Europe.

Following the war of the Gulf which highlighted the supremacy of CNN like source of images, EuroNews is created in order to propose a European prospect on the international topicality. It is also a question of reinforcing national televisions of public service in Europe and of finding a new support taking part in the construction of a European identity. Two distinct structures exploit the EuroNews chain directly: SECEMIE (Security company of the multilingual chain of EuroNews information) and SOCEMIE (Company operator of the multilingual chain of EuroNews information).

At the end of May 95, the SECEMIE opens its capital with the private sector by selling 49% of its shares in Alcatel-Alstom which becomes about it the main operator by the means of his subsidiary company, the General Western one. November 28th, 1997, the British company of production and audio-visual information ITN acquires the 49% of the capital of EuroNews held by Alcatel-Alstom. ITN, held in particular by great groups like Reuters, Carlton Communication and Granada Group, provides the newspapers of information of three British chains ITV, Chanel 4 and Five and seeks to be placed on the international market vis-a-vis its competitor BBC World. At this period, EuroNews sets up a new preparing and a new program timetable granting a greater place to the sections all-information and the direct ones. Moreover, ITN technically modernizes the chain by making it pass to the numerical whole in 1999.

The Portuguese language comes to supplement the five source languages in 1999, then the Russian language in 2001.

Following the will of ITN, since 2000, to sell its participation, the chain got busy to recompose its round table. Thus, on April 24th, 2003, an final agreement was signed between ITN, SECEMIE and SOCEMIE at the end which SECEMIE repurchased the shares of ITN and holds since this date 100% of the capital of SOCEMIE. This operation showed the will of the 18 public shareholders of the time to reinforce the character of public service of EuroNews. SECEMIE SA renewed its licensing agreement for the year 2004 on the basis of economic plan which relates to the five next years and which is with balance. It integrates an important capital spending program concerning the production equipments and also takes into account a capital growth following the increase in the participation of the Russian shareholder, who integrated the hard core of SECEMIE.
