Its family

Eugene the Iron of the Mound is the son of Henry the Iron of the Mound (1832 - 1906), major of artillery, director of the forts of Brest and the district, knight of the Légion of honor and Julie Marie Lea Wilson off Norwood. He is also the great-grandson of the general-count Louis Groult of the Rivers.

Eugene the Iron of the Mound is the brother of Georges Henri Marie Armand the Iron of the Mound (1861 - 1918), Jesuit who carried out missions in Alaska. George the Iron of the Mound is not the brother of the Bishop of Nantes.George the Iron of the Mound had a brother Transito, jéuite like him, Transito died on August 24th, 1900 and a Dolorès sister of which descent, all the three are the children of Henri of the Mound and Julia Lea Wilson.

Biography

Eugene the Iron of the Mound makes his studies with Rome It teaches during 4 years philosophy with the great seminar of Saint-Brieuc, then becomes the superior of the school of Cordeliers of Dinan, in 1896. The Iron of the Mound is named with the episcopal see of Nantes, it becomes bishop of Nantes on May 28th, 1914. It succeeds Pierre-Emile Rouard.

Eugene the Iron of the Mound has excellent relationship with the commanders of the American troops which unload in Nantes and like many catholics at that time, it supports the line at the time of the elections of 1919 and is suspected of integrism by the left. Like the pope Pie X, it is an adversary solved of the policy anticlerical and one of the last representatives of this episcopate of combat, even if it admits the legitimacy of the republican institutions .

About 1928, the Iron of the Mound decides to prohibit, in the stage performances organized by its parishioners, the simultaneous presence actors of opposed sex, forcing the men to play the part of the women.

As a bishop of Nantes, it chairs the congresses of the Christian trade unions in 1924 and 1928, but its short speeches translate reserves with regard to the CFTC. Reserves which we find among catholic owners of his diocese. Mgr the Iron of the Mound is also unfavorable to the specialized movements, style JOC, ACJF…. The Nantes clergy is often favorable to the propagation of the faith overseas, to start with the bishop of Nantes, Mgr the Iron of the Mound, or RP Martin, which found a company of missionaries.

The bishop organizes also pilgrimages with Lisieux and develops catholic teaching. In 1930, Ordo diocesan indicates that on 265 parishes, there remain nothing any more but 31 about it not to be equipped with Christian schools. Thanks to its work, there is more than 80 teacher-vicars in his diocese. Eugene the Iron of the Mound resigns on July 8th, 1935, at the 67 years age. Monseigneur Jean-Joseph-Leonce Villepelet succeeds to him.
