Biography
Wire of a merchant of silk trade, Eugene Scribe made his studies with the college Holy-Bores then made his right. Impassioned theater, it was hardly eighteen years old that it composed already, with his friends Casimir Delavigne, Henri Dupin, Charles-Gaspard Delestre-Poirson, of the plays which passed unperceived: Dervis (1811), the Inn or Brigands without the knowledge (1812), Thibault, count de Champagne (1813), the Graduate of Salamanque , the Undertaking (1815). Lastly, in 1815, a comedy, One night of the national guard , in collaboration with Delestre-Poirson, had success and launched its dramatic career.
Consequently, it was for Scribe, under the Restoration, a long continuation of success. Thanks to many collaborators, Scribe, which was one of the most prolific French authors and one of the librettists most fertile, composed nearly five hundred parts: comedies, light comedies, dramas, booklets of opera. It also gave novels, which did not have as much success than its dramatic works.
Scribe invented a type of play which knew to conquer the public by a dramatic construction without fault. In its comedies and its light comedies, it generally leaves an incident of little apparent importance which produces considerable consequences through a succession of sequences of an impeccable logic.
Only or with other authors, he wrote many booklets of opera and comic operas, among most famous: the Dumb woman of Portici of Auber (1828), Jewish the of Halévy (1835), Huguenots of Meyerbeer (1836), Favorite the of Donizetti (1840), the Prophet of Meyerbeer (1849), sicilian Vespers of Made green (1855).
He was elected with the French Academy on November 27th 1834.
He is buried with the Cimetière of the Father-Lachaise in Paris.
