Eugene Rœderer
Charles Eugene Rœderer was born with Strasbourg the October 6th 1815 and deceased with Rheims the May 13rd 1876. He was mayor of Gueux (the Marne) and wine merchant.
Eugene Rœderer was the brother of Louis Rœderer, chief of the important house of wines from champagne of Rheims, known of the whole world. On its arrival in Rheims, in 1832, it had entered this house like associate, and until 1876, it did not cease dealing with the commercial businesses.
In addition to its residence of Rheims, Rœderer had a splendid castle in the commune of Gueux, of which for 20 years it had managed the interests.
Its administration was large and generous, and in particular, it equipped this village with a splendid church of the Gothic style of the 13th century, whose canopies, exits of the workshops of Outstanding-Vogel, of Rheims, make the admiration of the visitors. This gift cost Rœderer 300.000 francs. Moreover, it bequeathed 50.000 francs for the poor of Saint-Thomas, and 40.000 francs for the Protestant church.
