Eugene Ormandy is a Leader and American Violoniste of Hungarian origin , born the November 18th 1899 and deceased the March 12th 1985
Biography
Born with Budapest (its name of then is Jenö Blau), he studies with the conservatory this same city.In 1921, he emigrates with the the United States and works initially with the Capitol Theater Orchestra with New York as violonist and later as a chief of this orchestra which accompanies the silent films.
From 1931 to 1936, Ormandy is named principal leader of the Symphony orchestra of Mineapolis. During the dark days of the Great depression, RCA Victor engages it for several recordings, among which its famous readings of the Symphonie nº 7 of Bruckner and the nº 2 of Malher. The excellence of these recordings contributes to equip Ormandy with an exceptional reputation of musician. Its career is in addition helped by Arthur Judson, the most powerful business manager of the American traditional music scene of the years 1930.
But these are the 44 last years with the Orchestre of Philadelphia which make all the current fame of Ormandy. Appointed chief associated with this orchestra as from 1936 (in alternation with Leopold Stokowski), it becomes two years about it later the single director and principal chief until his departure in 1980. It leads the orchestra through multiple concerts, with New York and in much of other American cities, but also in many rounds abroad. Among most memorable, let us distinguish this round in Finland in 1955 when many the members of the orchestra will return visit to the old type-setter Jean Sibelius (who dies two years later at the 91 years age) in his obscure Finnish retirement, and that of 1973 in République of China where the orchestra occurs in front of an enthusiastic public, private of traditional Western music since many decades.
Raised in the honorary row of knight of the British Empire by the queen Elisabeth II in 1976, Ormandy dies on March 12th, 1985 with Philadelphia.
Repertory
He particularly appreciated works of the post-romanticism and the beginning of the 20th century. He had been made the champion of the music of Serge Rachmaninov, directing the first of his symphonic Danses. He also led first American of several Symphonie S of Dmitri Chostakovitch like much of American works of Compositeur S.Ormandy is also known to have been a faithful and sensitive guide. Besides its heritage discographic includes many excellent collaborations with in particular Arthur Rubinstein, Rudolf Serkin, David Oistrakh, Isaac Stern, Leonard Pink, Itzhak Perlman, Emil Gilels, Van Cliburn, Emanuel Feuermann, Robert Casadesus…
