Eugene V (born Gabriele Condulmer with Venice in 1383 - died the February 23rd 1447), was a monk Italian Benedictine, before becoming pope of 1431 with 1447.

Nephew by his mother of Gregoire {{XII}}, Gabriele Condulmer is elected pope the March 3rd 1431, becoming the 207e pope of the Catholic church, under the name of Eugene V.

Calling upon the disease, the new Italian pope Eugene V does not dare to present himself to the Concile of Basle which he wanted oecumenical, but in the absence of the Church of the East, he names it “  Général  council; ”. Benefitting from its absence, the bishops reaffirmed the superiority of a council of bishops compared to the voice of a pope.

Eugene having dissolves the council, the bishops refused to obey. A few weeks later a popular riot in Rome, obliged the pope Eugene V to come to settle with Florence for nine years.

The Concile of Basle continued its work in spite of the dissolution ordered by the pope. In 1438, the Church of the East, which seeks support to face the Turkish threat, gives its agreement to take part in an ecumenical council, provided it is located on the edges of the Adriatic Sea, so that in the event of Turkish attack the Eastern ones can turn over quickly in their country. Eugene V thus transferred the council from Basle to Ferrare.

The majority of the prelates included/understood the goal of this transfer and accepted it, but some bishops and 300 ecclesiastics regarded this gesture as an abuse of authority on behalf of the pope and were opposed to it by electing the November 5th 1439 a antipape, Felix {{V}} (the duke Amédée of Savoy), which was not even cardinal, and was recognized only by the Lithuania and the Poland.

The January 24th 1439, Eugene V meets with Ferrare the Joseph patriarch of Constantinople. This same year, with the council transferred to Ferrare, it tries to finally carry out the union of Rome and the Églises of the East. One moment stopped by an epidemic of plague, the council enlise sixteen months on the Byzantine version of the Creed of Nicée. But, in 1440, a Turkish projection and the death of the patriarch Joseph of Constantinople accelerate a rapid proclamation of union (alliance) between the two Churches, which never entered into force  !

Eugene could turn over to Rome, but to Byzance, neither the Greek orthodoxe world, nor the Slavic Church accepted this sacred union. Besides a few hundreds of Venetian soldiers and gênois come to defend their interests, Constantinople, the Byzance old woman besieged by the Turks in 1453, will be given up by the Occident with its sort .

Eugene V founded a tax on the wine to collect funds for the Université of Rome “  Sapienza  ” but this money was used to build a palate close to Saint-Eustace, whom one baptized in his turn “  Sapienza  ” (wisdom).

It should be noted finally that in 1435, whereas Spanish invaded the Canaries and exploited its population, Eugene, informed of the company, launched the bubble Sicut dudum, prohibiting slavery categorically. This under penalty of excommunication. The papal authority, unfortunately, then was recognized little, and singularly by Spain: this call had few echoes on the event in question.
