Eugene III
Eugene III (Bernardo Paganelli di Montemagno), born with Pisa, was pope of 1145 with 1153.
Former monk of Cîteaux, it profited from the support of holy Bernard de Clairvaux with which it continued the committed reform by Gregoire VII. He made leave the second Crusade, already decided. He created the Sacré College, began the construction of the pontifical palate and approved the order of Midsummer's Day of Jerusalem (become Ordre of Malta).
He had been monk with Clairvaux.
Forced to move away from Rome, where dominated Arnaud de Brescia, he wandered in Italy, in Germany, France and could return only temporarily to Rome.
During its stay in France, it held a council in Paris to examine the doctrines of Gilbert of Porrée, which it condemns violently, and visited Clairvaux (1146).
He died the July 8th 1153 with Tivoli.
