Eugene Guillevic
Eugene Guillevic (Carnac, Morbihan, August 5th 1907 - Paris, March 19th 1997) is one of the most important French poets of second half of the 20th century. It never signed its many collections but of sound only name, Guillevic .
Biography
It comes in the world in the stony and marine landscape from the Brittany. Then his/her father, initially marine, is made gendarme and takes along it to Jeumont (Northern) in 1909, with Saint-Jean-Brévelay (Morbihan) in 1912, with Ferrette (Haut-Rhin) in 1919.
After having passed a baccalaureat of mathematics it is received with the contest of 1926 in the administration of the Recording (Alsace, the Ardennes). Named in 1935 in Paris principal writer with the Head office with the Ministry for Finances and the Economic affairs, it is affected in 1942 with economic Control. It belongs of 1945 to 1947 to the Cabinets of the communist ministers François Billoux (Nation's economy) then Charles Tillon (Rebuilding). In 1947 after the ousting of the communist ministers, it reinstates the General inspection of the Economy where it deals in particular with studies of economic situation and town and country planning, until its retirement in 1967.
It becomes as of before war the friend of Jean Follain which introduces it into the Sagesse group. Then it belongs to the group of the École of Rochefort. Catholic practitioner until around thirty years, he becomes communist sympathizer at the time of the War of Spain, adheres in 1942 to the Communist party whereas he binds to Paul Éluard and takes part in the publications of the clandestine press (Pierre Seghers, Jean Lescure). He remains, in spite of many reserves on end of the year 60, faithful to his engagement until 1980.
After one period of resistance, of rebellion against the social order and the order of the things, outlines a return to the interrogation, an attempt to tame the world and its silence. Refusing metaphysics, it chooses here, that it explores without end, passionately. Its poetry is concise, frank like the rock, rough and generous, while remaining suggestive. Its poetic is also characterized by its refusal of the metaphors, to which he prefers the comparisons, considered to be less untrue.
Guillevic received the Grand Prix of poetry of the French Academy in 1976 and the national Grand Prix of poetry in 1984.
Extracts
When us tremblions
One against the other in the bois
At the edge of the brook,
When our corps
Became with us,
When each one of us
Belonged itself in the autre
And that together we advance,
It was then aussi
Content of the printemps
Who passed in our corps
And which knew each other
