Eudes II of Blois
Eudes II of Blois known as Eudes Champagne the , († November 15th 1037 close to Bar-le-Duc) was count de Blois, of Châteaudun, of Chartres, of Rheims, of Turns, Beauvais and of Sancerre (under the name of Eudes II ) starting from 1004 and count de Troyes and of Meaux (under the name of Eudes Ier ) starting from 1022.
He is the son of the count Eudes I {{er}} of Blois and Berthe of Burgundy, girl of the king de Bourgogne Conrad III. He married Mathilde of Normandy, into 1003/04, then Ermengarde of Auvergne, girl of the Count Robert Ier of Auvergne, from which he had three children. He succeeds under count de Blois to his older brother Thibaut II.
He is one of the characters more stirring up of his time. He is in war against the duke of Normandy Richard II to which he does not want to return half of Dreux which constituted the dowry of his wife. Beaten, it is saved by the intervention of the Capétien Robert II, which married his/her Berthe mother of Burgundy. Thus it keeps Dreux.
Whereas it tries to release with its profit the Touraine, it is overcome by the count d' Anjou Foulque Nerra and the count of Maine Herbert Wake up-Dog with Pontlevoy in 1016. The fight against Anjou will not cease and Eudes II will fail in 1025 to take again Saumur.
In 1023, it seizes the county of Troyes with died without descent of his/her cousin, the count Etienne I {{er}} then attacks with the archbishop of Rheims and the duke of Lorraine. One needs an alliance of the emperor Henri II and the king Robert II to make it yield.
It then accepts the crown of Italy which the barons lombards propose to him who give up their idea then not to scramble itself with the king of France.
Then, with died of the king de Bourgogne Rodolphe III in 1032, it invades its kingdom and gives up the part in front of a coalition formed by the new emperor Conrad II and the king of France Henri I {{er}}.
An ultimate attempt in Lorraine leads it to its defeat. He dies in the combat on November 15th 1037.
