Etienne of Blois (1096 - October 25th 1154), lord d' Eye, count de Boulogne and of Mortain, king of England of 1135 with 1154.

Etienne is born with Blois in France from Etienne II count de Blois and from Adèle, girl of William the Conqueror. In 1115, it obtains the Comté of Mortain - confiscated with the count Guillaume de Mortain - who also includes the important seigniory resulting from the house of Bellême. Towards 1125 it marries Mathilde, (about 1103 - May 3rd, 1152), girl of the count de Boulogne Eustace III and Marie of Scotland, of which are born five children (Eustace, Baudoin, Mathilde, Guillaume and Marie).

To died from the king Henri Ier of England in 1135 the throne must pass to his/her daughter Mathilde Emperesse. Like all the noble ones of the kingdom, Etienne promised by twice recognizing it for queen. But, according to the idea that a woman cannot reign, it usurps the throne in its absence, and a civil war bursts between their respective partisans. The arrogance of Mathilde alienates supports to him, but the weakness of Etienne the dessert also, the changes of party is frequent.

In February 1141, Etienne east demolishes and captured with the battles of Lincoln. His wife Mathilde of Boulogne, takes the head of her party but it is expelled soon of London. The capture of Robert de Gloucester, bastard half-brother of Mathilde like   its best lieutenant, at the time of the Rout of Winchester the same year, led to an prisoner exchange: Robert against Etienne. In November, this last finds its throne.

It is maintained there with difficulty, but with the death of his son and heir Eustace (1127-1153) count de Boulogne who married in 1140 Constance of France, girl of Louis VI king de France, Etienne accepts a compromise. By the Treated of Wallingford of the November 6th 1153, he recognizes the son of Matthilde Emperesse and its second husband, Geoffroy V of Anjou, Henri like his successor.

Etienne dies of appendicitis with Dover. Its body is buried in the Abbaye of Faversham, where already his wife rests.

Its second wire Guillaume of Blois was count de Boulogne, of Mortain and Surrey. In 1154, it does Isabelle marry de Warenne (? - 1199).
