Duke of Transylvania in 1257. After having covered for one short period the dignity of duke of Styrie it controlled Transylvania of again 1260 with 1270. In 1262/1263 at the end of the agreement of Pozsony his/her father Béla IV preserves only the Western half of the kingdom, the oriental party fall under the authority of Etienne who takes the title of iunior rex Hungarie . However the war between the two kings began quickly, after some initial successes the party of Béla IV was overcome and Etienne gained the decisive battle at the beginning of March 1265 with Isaszeg. The armistice was signed in March 1266 on the Islands with the hares (current island Sainte Marguerite with Budapest). the two parties began with the mutual respect of their rights and the restitution of the unduly held goods.
Only king after the death of his father, Etienne V dies as of the August 6th 1272 on the Csepel island. He was buried in the abbey of Dominican of the Islands to hares near his Marguerite sister.
He had wife a girl of Sheihan Khan of the Coumans taken refuge in Hungary to flee the Mongolian which was baptized under the name of Elisabeth.
