Etienne Pasquier , born the June 7th 1529 with Paris and dead on September 1st 1615 in the same city, is a statesman, Historien, Humaniste, Poète and Juriste French.

Biography

During its youth, it resides at Paris. He becomes lawyer at the Parliament, in 1549, after having completed his studies under the direction of Jacques Cujas.

Eager to take part in the reconciliation between Protestants and catholics (see Wars of religion), it attempts to seek the historical origins of the unit of the French nation until in the past préchrétien of the country. Making profitable a long convalescence following an accidental poisoning which has occurred in 1558, it starts to work on this subject until in 1560, year when it publishes the first volume of its Recherches of France .

In 1565, it is illustrated as a partisan of the Gallicanisme by its pleading in the lawsuit which opposes the Université of Paris to the Jésuite S, making triumph the cause over the first. It also takes part in the “Great days” of Poitiers (1579) and of Troyes (1583): at the time of these bases, which are held irregularly until the end of the 17th century, a commission whose members are selected by the king within the Parliament of Paris, is sent in province with any capacity to hear and regulate the businesses which are subjected to him, in particular those which relate to the abuse seigneuriaux rights. With the favor of these events, Etienne Pasquier writes and publishes the jokes which it exchanges with his colleagues.

In 1585, it is named by Henri III lawyer-general of the king to the Room of the accounts. It is distinguished there by being opposed to the system from the sale hereditary grounds and loads.

The Wars of religion force it, in 1588, to leave Paris for Tours during the Ligue: it makes these years profitable to work on its Recherches . In March 1594, it regains the capital with the convoy of Henri IV.

It resumes its work there before taking its retirement. Then, it publishes in nearly one decade a great number of literary works, before dying at the eighty six years age of the continuations of a striking down disease, on September 1st 1615.

Work

Its considerable work forever joined together and completely published. The edition of reference is that of Amsterdam (2 flights. fol., 1723). The selection of Leon Feugère, published with an introduction worked out to Paris, in 1849 of it is most accessible (two volumes).

As a poet, Etienne Pasquier was a minor member of the movement of the Pleiad. More interesting are its works in prose: its Research in three volumes, its letters and its pleadings.
