Etienne Ozi
Etienne Ozi (Nimes, December 9th 1754 - Paris, August 5th 1813) is a Bassoniste, type-setter and pedagog French.
Biography
Etienne Ozi is regarded as the largest bassoonist of his time. This Nîmois of origin settled with Paris in 1779 and made a splendid career there. Indeed, he played until 1790 with the Concert of sacred music at least 37 concertos for bassoon of which 19 are of its composition. Bound like Mozart to freemasonry, it had as a guard the Duc of Orleans and was first bassoon of the music of the King. Musician for many institutions (of the Circus of the Palais Royal in 1790 with the Vault of music of Napoleon, while passing by the Theater of the Republic and Arts in 1799-1800), type-setter for a Bassoon to six or seven keys and director of the publisher of the Academy, Ozi is also known for his teaching. He was indeed professor at the free School of music of the Parisian National guard, future Conservatory national of music of Paris. This last posts from the start its intention to unify teaching, through the development of a whole of teaching works which will be imposed to the pupils. Fourteen official methods, taking account of the most recent evolution of the instrumental invoice, thus see the day between 1800 and 1814.
Method of bassoon
Of international impact, the New Method of bassoon of Ozi adopted by the Academy to be used for the study in this establishment (1803), first complete handbook for the training of the bassoon in France, “contains the Principles detailed for the Study of the Bassoon, the Exercises in all Tons with basic Accompagnement, twelve Sonatas of a progressive difficulty, Thirty Ranges varied and Forty two Whims. It contains also the manner of preserving the Instrument, and the Means of making the Sheers. ” Etienne Ozi considerably enriched expressive and technical qualities by his instrument.
