Etienne Martin (1913 - 1995) is a Sculpteur French

Biography

Born on February 4th, 1913 with Loriol in the Drome, Etienne Martin follows from 1929 to 1933 the courses of the School of Beautiful arts of Lyon and meets Marcel Michaud. He comes to Paris in 1934, working in the workshop of Charles Malfray with the Académie Ranson where he binds with the painters Roger Bissière, Jean Moal, Jean Bertholle, Alfred Manessier, Zelman, Vera Pagava and the sculptor François Stahly. He is part with them of the group " Témoignage", animated in Lyon by Marcel Michaud in 1936, which exposes to Paris in 1938 and 1939.

Mobilized, Etienne Martin is prisoner in Germany and released in 1941. He remains in 1942 with Oppède with Stahly and Zelman in the community animated by the architect Bernard Zehrfuss then in 1943-1944 with Dieulefit (Drome) where he binds with the writer Henri-Pierre Roché. He settles then with Mortagne-with-Pole in Normandy. Of return to Paris in 1947 he lives at Roché, meets Brancusi and Gurdjieff, of which he attends mobility during ten years, practitioner of the spiritual exercises, with reference to the East and the Taoïsme.

Etienne Martin starts in 1954 the series of the Demeures which returned it celebrate and receive in 1966 the Grand Prix of sculpture to the 33e Biennale de Venise. He is professor of 1968 to 1983 with the 3Ecole Nationale Sup3erieure of the Art schools of Paris for the monumental sculpture. He is elected in 1971 with the Académie of the Art schools. In 1984 an exposure of the whole of its Demeures is presented to the Center Pompidou in Paris.

Work

Its nonfigurative sculptures have a great force thanks to the inspired use of the vacuums which delimit volumes.

  • with the Museum of Modern art of the Town of Paris ( the Passage , 1969),
  • at the House of the Culture of Amiens ( Residence 4 , 1961),
  • with the field of Orcan Wood to Noyal-sur-Vilaine (Ille-et-Vilaine) ( the Ruin , Athanor , Residence 1 ).
