Etienne Marie Antoine Champion of Nansouty

Etienne Marie Antoine Champion of Nansouty (count of), general French, born the May 30th 1768 with Bordeaux, dead the February 12th 1815 with Paris.

Biography

It was allowed with the Military academy of Paris the October 21st 1782.

Junior-gentleman with the rank of second lieutenant the May 30th 1783, it became second lieutenant to Burgundy the March 26th 1785, captain of replacement to the regiment of Frank-County-Cavalry the April 6th 1788, and, the May 24th, with the regiment of Hussards-Lauzun, become 6e regiment.

Named lieutenant-colonel of the 9e regiment of cavalry the April 4th 1792, it made the campaigns of 1792, 1793, and of year II at year VII with the armies on the the Rhine.

Nansouty was pointed out soon its chiefs by his bravery, its happy provisions and its talents. It could be made useful in each rank which it obtained, and preserved in its regiment the discipline which it was so difficult to maintain then.

Named chief of brigade the 19 frimaire year II, it justified the opinion that the general-in-chief Jean Victor Marie Moreau had conceived his prudence and of its value; but, as modest as brave man, he refused several times the rank of brigadier general, as he accepted only the 12 fructidor year VII.

Employed to the reserve army the 15 ventôse year VIII, it returned soon in the Armée with the Rhine.

Called on a vaster theater, the Nansouty general rendered services more effective and contributed strongly to successes of the army of the Rhine. He assisted the general-in-chief Ney in the various attacks which he made make, since Seltz until Mainz.

Nansouty surprised, with Sundhoffen, a company of Uhlan S, which it brought back captive of war without to have lost only one man.
