Etienne Gilson

Etienne Gilson (June 13rd 1884 with Paris - September 19th 1978 with Cravant (Yonne)) is a Philosophe and Historien French.

Its life

Gilson taught the history of the medieval Philosophie of 1921 to 1932 with the Sorbonne, where the weather had been its studies before, before occupying the pulpit of medieval philosophy to the Collège de France. In 1929 it takes part in the foundation of the pontifical Institute of studies medieval of Toronto to the Canada. Although being in the beginning specialist in history of philosophy, it was also one of the leaders of the neo-thomist movement roman catholic. He was elected with the French Academy in 1946. Its meeting with the bookseller Joseph Vrin was at the origin of the creation of the editions Vrin.

Its work

Gilson analyzed the historical Thomisme in manner. For Gilson, the thomism is not identified with the Scolastique, but is built rather against it. Gilson did not detect a decline of philosophy in a science which would announce the renouncement of the man of his right to judge and regulate nature, the man not being any more but one simple part of nature: green light would then be given according to him to the most inconsistent companies and désatreuses as regards company whose the men and the human institutions would be victims. Against the philosophical systems, Gilson was convinced that the back in favor of the philosophy of Thomas d' Aquin could make it possible to leave this danger zone.

Gilson was a very prolific writer, and its many writings of Histoire of philosophy, primarily medieval, are much read and discussed.
