Etienne Decroux (Paris, July 19th, 1898 - Boulogne-Billancourt, March 12th, 1991) was a Acteur and MIME French.
After its formation at the school of the Old man-Dovecote of Jacques Chip, it entered the company of Charles Dullin where it will work as lasting actor of many years. He will also work under the direction of Antonin Artaud, Louis Jouvet and will take part in the realization of several films under the direction of Marcel Carné and Jacques Prévert. Its interest increasingly shown for the expression of the body, will carry it to cease its activity of professional actor to devote itself entirely to the art of the movement. In collaboration with Jean-Louis Barrault which was its first pupil, his research will carry it to gradually work out an original and new technique which it will name: Body MIME. As of the Forties, it will found in Paris its school where many artists of the whole world will make their formation. It will have to teach in various prestigious theatrical institutions such as Piccolo Teatro of Giorgio Strehler and Actors Studio of New York where it will create its own company which will turn to the United States in the Fifties. Among its pupils we can quote: Marcel Marceau, Yves Lebreton, Thomas Leabhart, Jean Asselin, Corinne Soum.
