Etienne Báthory (pol. Stefan Batory ) and (Hungarian Báthory István ), voïvode or prince of Transylvania then king de Pologne,

He was elected prince de Transylvanie the May 25th 1571. Under its reign as from 1575 Transylvania paid an annual tribute of 15.000 guilders to the Sultan.

It succeeded in 1575 Henri de Valois on the throne of Poland, by the influence of the Turkish sultan Murad III, which supported it against its candidate, Maximilien of Austria. To legitimate its accession with the throne he married on May 1st 1576 Anna Jagellon (1523 - 1596) the sister of Sigismond II Auguste last king de Pologne of this dynasty.

He took again Dantzig on the Emperor, winner three times of the tsar Ivan the Terrible he forced the Russian S to yield the Courlande to him and part of the Livonie. He brought wise reforms in the civil government and founded the university of Wilno in Lithuania.

He thought of making of Poland, a hereditary kingdom when he died the December 12th 1586 with Grodno of an access of anger (probably victim of a Aneurysmal rupture). He was buried with Cracow in the crypt of the Cathedral of the Wawel.
