Etienne-Emile Baulieu

Etienne-Emile Baulieu , born Emile Blum the December 12th 1926 with Strasbourg, is doctor of medicine (1955) and doctor science (1963). He was director of research unit to the INSERM and professor of biochemistry to the Université of Paris XI. He is professor emeritus with the Collège de France and in particular was President of the French Academy of Science in 2003 and 2004.

Biography

Originating in Alsace, it was born under the patronym Emile Blum, wire of Leon Blum, a doctor of Strasbourg. During the Second world war, it engages in the Résistance in 1944 when it takes the name of Etienne Baulieu. With the Release, it keeps, by modifying it, this name and is registered with the Medical college of Paris. It follows first of all the teaching of max Fernand Jayle in the field of the hormones steroids and in particular of DHEA. It meets then Gregory Pincus, the father of the pill, with which it will work thereafter.

He was elected member of the Academy of Science on February 8th, 1982 and chaired it in 2003-2004. Professor emeritus with the Collège de France, Etienne-Emile Baulieu was of 1996 to 2004 member of the national Advisory committee of ethics for the health and life sciences. He belongs to the Académie of medicine since 2002. He is also member of the American National Academy off Sciences since 1990 and was rewarded in 1989 for the prestigious Prix Lasker. Professor Baulieu in addition chairs the Institut of longevity and ageing, created in 2002 on his proposal with Francoise Forette.
