Synopsis

Joel Barrish (Jim Carrey) and Clementine Kruczynski (Kate Winslet) see nothing any more but the bad sides of their tumultuous history of love, so much so that this one made erase his memory any trace of this relation. Broken down, Joel contacts the inventor of the process Lacuna, Dr. Mierzwiak, so that it also extirpates his memory all that attached it to Clementine. Two technicians, Stan and Patrick, settle in his residence and put at work, in the presence of the secretary, Mary. The memories start to ravel in the head of Joel, most recent with oldest, and fly away one by one, forever. But by going up the wire of time, Joel redécouvre what he liked since always out of Clementine - the inalterable magic of a love of which nothing in the world should deprive it. Fighting of all its forces to preserve this treasure, it then engages a battle of the last chance against Lacuna…

  • a recurring reference to Huckleberry Hound intervenes in film, Joel Barish thus interpreting in Clémentine the refrain of the song Oh My Darling, Clementine :
Oh my darling, oh my darling,
Oh my darling, Clementine!
You were lost and gone forever
Dreadful sorry, Clementine.
  • the title of film is drawn from the poem Eloisa to Abelard of Alexander Pope, quoted in film:
How happy is the blameless Vestal' S batch!
The world forgetting, by the world forgot;
Eternal sunshine off the spotless mind!
Each pray' R accepted, and each wish resign' D .
translation in French:
That the fate of the irreproachable vestal is happy!
the forgetting world, by the forgotten world;
Glare eternal of the immaculate spirit!
Each exaucée prayer, and each declined wish

literary translation of Aime Feutry:
That the fate of a Virgin can excite the desire!
Virtuous, it carries out a quiet life;
Of the beneficial spirits, full with innocent lies,
Makes be born and fly its more pleasant dreams.

freer translation in the doubled French version of film:

O you them happy vestals

soft irreproachable partners, that your hearts are happy since insensitive
O full sun the head, O major grace
virtue, girl of the sky, crowned lapse of memory of the world
