This star is a Céphéide, varying from a Magnitude connect from 3,6 to 4,4, during one 7,176641 days time. With Delta Cephei, Zeta Geminorum and Beta Doradus, it is one of Céphéides the best visible ones with the naked eye; i.e. the star itself and the variation of its brightness can be distinguished with the naked eye. Some other Céphéides, like Polaris, are luminous but have only one variation of too small brightness to be seen with the naked eye.

It is with roughly 1200 light-years of the Ground. It is a yellow-white supergéante and it is approximately 3000 times more luminous than the Sun, with a Diamètre approaching 60 times that of the Sun.
