Estratega
The cardinal Pierre Gerlier born with Versailles, the January 14th 1880 and dead Lyon 1965) was a man of the church French, archbishop of Lyon and so Primat of Gaules.
A late vocation
Lawyer with the bar of Paris, he was president of ACJF (1907 - 1913).
A fulgurating ecclesiastical career
Ordered priest in 1921, it becomes bishop of Tarbes and Lourdes in 1929.
Archbishop of Lyon
It is named archbishop Lyon on July 30th, 1937. It is created cardinal on December 13rd of the same year under Trinity-of-Mounts.In November 1940, he pronounces a sentence which will be reproached to him later: “Pétain, it is France and France, it is Pétain”.
September 5th, 1942, it publishes a letter which is read in all the parishes of its diocese: “the rights of the State have limits… ”. It organizes dies of rescues for the Jews in danger.
These actions will enable him to leave indemme “the Affaire Finaly”.
He dies on January 17th, 1965, at the 85 years age.
The Gerlier cardinal receives the medal of the Justes among the nations of Yad Vashem on July 15th, 1980.
