Antoni Gaudí (born Antoni Gaudí I Horn the June 25th 1852 with the “Farmhouse of Caldera” with Reus, and dead the June 10th 1926 with Barcelona, is a Catalan Architecte . Qualified Modernismo, its work marked in a durable way architecture of Barcelona. One owes him in particular the Palais Güell registers with the world heritage of UNESCO.

Its work

Graduate of the School of architecture of Barcelona in 1878, it works as of his beginnings with the architect Josep Fontseré on the project of the Parc of Ciutadella. Its career really begins in 1883, with the beginning of the construction of the Casa Vicens.

Young person Architect, it is initially inspired by Eugene Purple-the-Duke but well quickly, it breaks with the Style neogothic and is pointed out by its originality and its imagination. As of its first projects, it makes cohabit architecture and furniture. Registered in the mobility of the Art nouveau then sails about it in Europe, it will be quickly the carry-standard of the modernismo , which is the Spanish alternative. The main features of its current are the inspiration in the forms, the geometry and the colors of nature.

Antoni Gaudí will be in particular constant by the industrial rich person Eusebio Güell, for whom it will create the Palais Güell in 1889, work registered with the world heritage of UNESCO just like the Casa Milà built in 1907 or the Parc Güell that it arranged of 1900 with 1914.

In 1883, it is selected to undertake the construction of a Cathédrale dedicated to the Holy Family: the Sagrada Família , financed by private gifts. Until its death in 1926, it concentrates on this project which it regards as the project of its life. Construction proved to be problematic, in particular stopped in 1914 by lack of means financial.

Of alive sound only the chorus and the frontage of the Transept southern will be carried out (the tower San Barnabé and the frontage of the Nativity). This unfinished monument is, at the beginning of the 21e century, still in work always subsidized by the gifts of private individuals; these last years saw considerable advances in its construction. Located, at the time, in the middle of the fields, it is surrounded today by the city.

A late recognition

Its work were very criticized per many its contemporaries, who called Put it Milà, the “career” ( Pedrera ), in order to underline the organic aspect of it, even the absence of what was then regarded as true architecture. George Orwell, of passage to Barcelona during the War of Spain, was also very critical with regard to modernistic architecture .

The principal supports of Gaudí were its customers, the ecclesiastical world (Association of the Excessively pious people of San Jose) and the Bourgeoisie industrial Catalan woman (Eusebi Guell in particular).

It is only a long time after its death that the work of Gaudí was recognized and adapted by the Inhabitants of Barcelona, who regard it today as one of the most brilliant children of Catalonia. Today, its constructions, and particularly the Sagrada Família , appear among the best assets of the Tourisme inhabitant of Barcelona. Antoni Gaudí from now on is considered at the same time by the specialists and the general public.

Enthusiastic Catalan nationalist, Antoni Gaudí did not hesitate to face prohibition to speak Catalan in public, which was worth one day to him to be stopped and thrown in prison. But this enthusiasm Nationaliste was moulted at the end of its life in an enthusiasm Catholique, coinciding at the same time with the difficult progression of the building site of the Sagrada Família and with important financial problems resulting in particular from its progressive insulation.

Vêtu of worn and used clothing, nobody recognized in him the famous architect when it was reversed by a Tramway. He died of the continuations of this accident a few days later, in a hospital where he will have been led too late. He was entitled however to a justified homage of his city which buried it in the Crypte of the Sagrada Família to which he had entirely dedicated his twelve last years.

Francesc Pujols, which was one of the first to recognize it, devoted a book in 1927 to him. A lawsuit in Béatification of Antoni Gaudi was opened with the the Vatican in 2003. The analysis of the file of the Catalan architect, to which certain documents lend mystical gifts, is in hand and should still take a few years.

Quotations

  • Architecture is the first of the visual arts, the sculpture and painting proceeds of it. Its supremacy comes from the light. Architecture is the ordering of the light, the sculpture is play with the light, painting, reproduction of the light by the color which is the decomposition of this one.

  • The structure which will be that of Sagrada Familia, I initially tested it for the Güel Colony. Without this preliminary test, I would never have dared to adopt it for the Temple
  • So that a work of architecture is beautiful, it is necessary that all the elements have an accuracy of situation, dimensions, forms and colors.
  • According to Le Corbusier, model that I saw of this architect is an assembly of parallelepipeds, one would say the quay of a station where one discharges from the packing cases, some of them evoke shelves. This man has a mentality of carpenter.
