Estavayer-the-Lake is a common Canton of Freiburg, it is the Chef-lieu District of Broye and is located at the edge of the Neuchâtel Lake.

History

Although the archaeological excavations are far from numerous, it can be established that the territory of common knew the human occupation in any case as of the Mesolithic (8000 - 5500 before Jesus-Christ.). The occupation of banks is dense during the Neolithic and the end of the Bronze Age. During the other periods, the level of the lake pushed back the establishment of the habitats on the heights. The surveys of the highway A1 reveal many traces of protohistoric occupation and several habitats. Tombs were exhumed and perhaps their furniture attests establishment of the Early middle ages. The patronym of the parish, the St. Lawrence , already at that time suggests the creation of a place of worship.
