Estaque

Estaque is a district of Marseilles, located in the 16 {{E}} district, at the north-western end of the city, between sea and hill, and comprising a small port.

The word Provençal estaco which gave him its name means “fastener”, and by extension “ring of mooring”, or “port”.

The site of Estaque caused inspiration famous painters such as Paul Cézanne, Georges Braque, Raoul Dufy and Auguste Renoir, which declared it most beautiful “of the world”.

Although the Marseillais call this district “the Estaque-beach”, the seaside is mainly occupied by the fishing port, in water of which water tournaments are held periodically. A beach was arranged at the exit of Estaque, under the road of Martigues, with the place known as Corbières ; it is the only beach of all the northern roads of Marseilles.

The Marseillais come readily in family or between friends, with the bar the day, the restaurant the evening, on the quay of the port. One also comes there to taste his Panisse S, sections of mashed potatoes of pea-scanty fried, and his Fuss-frégi S, kinds of fritters powdered with sugar.

Estaque is served by FOR THE THIRD TIME the SNCF (station common to the lines from Marseilles to Avignon via Rognac and Port-de-Bouc), and by the urban lines of bus (RTM) n° 35 and 36 since the center town.

A Marseilles legend

God, one day, decided to give to Marseilles all the saints of the paradise. Having taken in a large bag, it flew over the city, and one threw them after the other: Holy Anne, Saint Pierre, Holy Gabriel, Saint Louis, Holy Henri,…. And when it had finished, arrived at the end of the city, its bag was empty, and it threw the estaco (fastener).
