The Estadio Nacional de Chile is located at Santiago, Chile in the commune of Ñuñoa. It is a sports complex and leisures of 64 hectares, where seat the national selection of football of Chile. Its titular club is the Universidad de Chile, which rents the stage to play. Also, it reception of the significant events like concerts and other celebrations.

History

It was built where was located the Campos de Sports of Ñuñoa (where was located leaves old will chacra Lo Valdivieso ). These grounds were given by the philanthropist Jose Domingo Cañas in 1918 for the leisures of the population.

The “Coloso de Ñuñoa” is inaugurated the December 3rd 1938 by the President of the Republic Arturo Alessandri Palma. Nowadays, Estadio Nacional is managed by the Instituto Nacional de Deportes of Chile (Chiledeportes) and was declared like National Historic building .

Prison camps

According to information coming from the National Commission over the prisons policy and torture , Estadio Nacional at summer used like prison camp between September and November 1973, lasting the government of Augusto Pinochet, following the coup d'etat of 1973.

The prisoners were divided by sex, while locking up by group of six people. The cycle-racing track was used to carry out the interrogations.

For these events of Ñuñoa, 40.000 prisoners roughly passed by the stage, including one great number have transferred to Prison camp from Chacabuco, located at 110 kilometers of Antofagasta. A great number of prisoners were killed.

Musical and social events

Telethon in Estadio Nacional

Since 1995, the final stage, or better known as harms of fence profited from the handicapped children Telethon, was a great success in Estadio Nacional, the place sheltered more than 70.000 people for the night of fence. The years during which the Telethon finished in Estadio Nacional are: 1995, 1996, 1998, 2000, 2002, 2003, 2004 and finally in 2006.

During the month of October 2000, with places the Ninth World Championship Junior of Athletics. It should be added that it is the first time that it is held in South America. This championship is carried out in Estadio Nacional.
