History
ESQUERDES, formerly called SKERDA OR EKARDE (Escherde, as old French meant scale or rough ground, according to other interpretations, it would mean passage , is a small village of the Pas-de-Calais of 939 hectares, located between Saint-omer and Lumbres in the valley of Aa, its altitude varies between 27 and 136 Mr.Old village, Esquerdes was on the great Roman way Leulène which went from Thérouane to Sangatte, on the coast. An archaeological prospection of 1984, had made it possible to discover on 2 sites known as Tripoux and the Paradise of the traces of the Neolithic period (cut flints and bones).
The common one kept of its past certain monuments:
The Crèvecoeur farm close to the river, today private property, is consisted a whole of buildings (of which a tower) of the 15th century, having belonged to Jeanne of Trémoillepuis to her son Philippe de Crèvecoeur (born about 1418 - deceased in Arbresle in 1494). Warrior, it served successively Charles the Bold one (1433 - 1477), Duc of Burgundy, then with his death, his enemy the king Louis XI. He was named Marshal of France in 1483 and substituted his patronym for that of Esquerdes.
In the center of the village, on the place, draws up a church, built starting from the medium of XIIe until the 17th century out of stone and out of chalk, initially attached to the diocese of Thérouane, it passes in 1557, under the dependence of the diocese of Boulogne. With its epitaph of the 14th century, its bell of 1518 and the tombstone of Jeanne of Trémoill, the church is since 1919 monument of the French inheritance.
The history of Esquerdes is related to the evolution of two industries, those of the paper and the powder, which developed until the 19th century and which allowed an increase in its population. In 1790, whereas the commune was named chief town of canton, there were approximately 500 inhabitants, 200 years after this figure has triplet.
In 1850, the mill of confosse of Mr. the Baron De Colbert was repurchased by Charles Verschaeve, merchant of paper in Lille. The industry of paper developed and thrived in the valley of Aa. The house of paper, inaugurated on June 24th, 1994, testimony of this activity, revives to us this history and proposes exposures, animations as well as a workshop of artistic creation on the topic of paper.
The national powder mill of Esquerdes was created at the end of the 17th century by the Royal Régie of the Powders and Salpêtres under Louis XIV, by his Minister for the military businesses, Michel Letellier. Two mills which existed then on the site were transformed into mills with powder. The powder mill ceased its activities in 1970. Nowadays the industrial waste land was renovated. In January 1999, the department, owner of the park, arranged the grounds to preserve them at the natural state and to accommodate the public. The commune dealt with the restoration of the building principal, become from now on village hall, as well as the chimney, inaugurated respectively on April 24th, 1999 and on June 9th, 2000.
