Espirat

Espirat is a common French, located in the department of the Puy-de-Dôme and the area of Auvergne. Espirat belongs to the urban surface of Clermont-Ferrand.

Geography

Espirat is in the middle of the Limagne, in a sometimes called area " Tuscany auvergnate" because of the fields (mainly of garlics) punctuated of hillocks and slopes (formerly covered with vines and orchards).

History

Espirat, like many villages of the Limagne (Reignat, Eye…), has a strong villager (strengthened district). In XIVe and XVe centuries, vis-a-vis the insecurity of the time (War One hundred Year old and competitions seigneuriales with Reignat…), the village communities organized their own defense. The decline of the feudal capacity did not guarantee any more protection to them formerly assured by the lord.

This enclosure, built in the center of the village (around the church), is made up of a core at the tight houses. Returned peace, the fort lost its defensive vocation, and the houses are used still today as attics, to store grain or pink Ail there (“With the garlic of Espirat, a long time you will live! ”).
