Esméralda is the heroin Romance Notre-Dame de Paris of Victor Hugo.

The character in the novel

Dancer Tzigane, 16 years old, whose charms did not displease with the archdeacon Claude Frollo. But Frollo regarded it as a gipsy, therefore badly seen in the company of the Church. It charged Quasimodo capturing it with so that it can have it. But the latter could escape to him by a section from archers, ordered by the captain of the guard Phoebus de Châteaupers. When Esmeralda finds Phoebus later several days, it lets to him see the love that it inspired to him. Admittedly, Phoebus is promised in marriage to the young Fleur-of-Lily, but it is also allured by the gipsy. It gives him appointment in a one-eyed house, but at the time when it will arrive to its ends, Frollo occurs and stabs it. Shown murder, beautiful Esmeralda however does not want, to escape the torment, to agree to be given to Frollo. When one brings it in front of the cathedral Notre-Dame to undergo his sorrow, Quasimodo - which also likes it seizes it and trails it in the church, where the right of asylum puts it at the shelter. There, it takes care on it, jealous and savage, perhaps hoping to allure it.

However, the gangsters with which lived Esmeralda come to deliver it. Low Sunday, fearing wrongly for the safety of its protected, defends the cathedral of the invaders. Frollo benefits from the tumult to take along Esmeralda with him, and once more tries to allure it. Furious of its refusal, it delivers it between the claws of the old recluse of the Hole-with-rats, Pâquette Chantefleurie, become Soeur Gudule. But instead of letting go its hatred of the gipsies and to tear Esmeralda, it recognizes in this one his/her own daughter, who was called in Agnès truth, thanks to a small shoe that the small one related to it the day of its removal. It cannot however benefit from these meeting again because the policemen find Esméralda and again trail it with the Gibet. She will die in the bottom of the gibet which awaits his/her daughter, falling whereas she tried to defend it. The object of all the desires will burn, victim of the jealousies. It will expire its last breath at the same time as Frollo, precipitate of a tower of Notre-Dame by a tormented Low Sunday. The bones of Esmeralda will finish in a pit where pile up the skeletons of condemned to death. It is which the uneven one will join it to finish its days.

But this fiction seems not completely not to be only the fruit of the thought of Victor Hugo. One found the body of uneven on that of an young woman close to the cathedral.
