Escudo

The escudo is the name of the national currency of several States, whose majority are old Portuguese colonies . Its name means ecu and recalls that the first parts carried the representation of the ecu of the sovereigns.

Current monetary units

the escudo is inter alia the name of the current currency of the Cape Verde, the Escudo course-verdien (CVE), which is bound by a fixed rate to the Euro.

Obsolete monetary units

  • the Portuguese Escudo, Escudo português , used until the introduction of the Euro;
  • the Angolan Escudo, Escudo angolano (Angola) replaced by Kwanza after independence
  • the Escudo of Guinea-Bissau, Escudo da Guiné-Bissau (Guinea-Bissau) replaced by CFA franc in 1985
  • the Mozambican Escudo, Escudo of Moçambique (Mozambique) replaced by the métical after independence
  • the Chilean Escudo, Escudo chileno (escudo Chile in) replaced by the peso after the economic crisis
