Escout is a common French, located in the department of the Yrénées-Atlantiques and the area Aquitaine.

The grounds of the commune are bordered in the south by the Gave d' Ossau, and are crossed by affluents of the Gave d' Oloron such as the Escou, the brooks the Auronce (and by its tributary the Labronze brook), Moulias, Laberou, Arrigastou, Gabarn, Ret Caut and Glacé.

Toponymy

The toponym Escout appears in the forms Escot (1385, censier of Béarn), Escoot and Feels Bisentz d' Escoot (1442, notaries of Oloron), Esquoot and Scot (respectively 1538 and 1546, reformation of Béarn).

Several assumptions were evoked. For some, this name inhabitant of Béarn could mean Scottish or station of guet or be a derivative of the name of brook “Escou”. The most probable assumption is are coot ( the pasture ).

History

Paul Raymond note that in 1385, Escout counted 16 fires and depended on the Bailliage of Oloron.
