Escou

Escou is a common French, located in the department of the Yrénées-Atlantiques and the area Aquitaine.

Hydrography

The commune owes its name with the brook the Escou which crosses it. Its affluents, the brooks Sarailles, Arrigastou and Bidou as well as the brooks Moulias (affluent of the Gave d' Oloron), Labronze (tributary of the Auronce) are also present on its grounds.

Toponymy

The toponym Escou appears in the forms Escoo (1380, contracts of Luntz), Scoo (1546, reformation of Béarn) and Feels Pierre d' Escou (1656, insinuations of the diocese of Oloron).

History

Paul Raymond note that in 1385, Escou counted 11 fires and depended on the Bailliage of Oloron.
