Esches (river)
Esches is a small French river affluent of Right Bank of the Oise.
Geography
Esches occurs with Méru, in the Département of Oise, and is thrown in the river of the same name to Persan in the department of the Val-d'Oise.
Course of Esches
The river crosses the following communes, of upstream downstream:
- Méru (department of Oise)
- Esches
- Fosseuse
- Bornel
- Beautiful-Church
- Persan Chambly
- (department of the Val-d'Oise and confluence with Oise)
Hydrology
The average interannual flow or module of Esches was observed during one 20 years period (1988-2007), with Bornel, locality located little before its confluence with the Oise. The catchment area of the river is there of 106 km ², i.e. more than 86% its totality which makes 125 km ².
The interannual medium flow or module of the river with Bornel is of 0,748 m ³ a second.
The seasonal fluctuations of flow of Esches are very weak, as it is very often the case in the North-West of the basin of the Seine. It is not easy to speak high and about low waters for such regular rivers. However, it is noted that the average monthly flows go up very gently as from November (0,646 m ³ a second) until spring (flow from 0,83 to 0,89 m ³ a second March at May with a culminating point in April), then drop also gently until November. One notes thus that Esches is a river with average monthly flow very constant throughout the year. However they are only monthly averages there and the flows can show more marked fluctuations according to the years and over short periods.
Thus with the low water levels, the VCN3 can drop up to 0,220 m ³, in the event of dry period quinquennial, which, though strong low for the river, cannot however be qualified of severe low water level (see note).
The risings, as for them are never important. The QIX 2 and QIX 5, or calculated flows of biennial and quinquennial rising, are worth respectively 2,3 and 2,8 m ³. The QIX 10 or calculated flow of decennial rising is of 3,1 m ³ a second, the QIX 20 of 3,5 m ³, while it QIX 50 was not calculated fault of duration of sufficient observation to determine it validly (see note). Thus, as it is seen, taking into account the size of its basin, Esches is located in the category of the least impetuous rivers of country.
The recorded maximum instantaneous flow with Bornel was of 3,35 m ³ a second on December 3rd 2000, while the value maximum day laborer was of 2,81 m ³ a second on July 7th, 2001. By comparing the first of these values with those of the scale of the QIX of the river, it appears that this rising, of a vicennial nature, and thus was hardly intended to repeat itself with average interval of less than 20 years.
Esches is a small relatively abundant river for the area. The Lame of water past in its catchment area is of 223 millimetres annually, which is certainly lower than the overall average of France all confused basins. But one must note that Esches is one of the rare rivers of the area more or less to reach the level of the average of the basin of the Seine (more or less 230 to 240 millimetres). The specific Flow (or Qsp) reached the average figure of 6,1 liters a second and per square kilometer of basin.
