History

The origin of the name comes from the occitan are (them), casals (enclosed surrounding the house, garden).

Escazeaux is an old walled village which preserved rich person communal records going up at XIVe century. Its habits were granted in 1271 by Bernard d' Astaffort and his son. They granted many advantages to people who settled there, in particular a house or site of house with several grounds, including one to make an orchard. Of XIIIe century to the Revolution this seigniory belonged to the Viscounts of Terride.

Escazeaux was a strengthened village. Four doors provided with drawbridges gave on the ditches. The walls with machicolation were by far in far pouvues from watch towers connected by a covered way; it is question of a fortress in 1403. The village had also a small hospital maintained by charitable legacies.

The parish church, dedicated to Saint Severin, was built during War the One hundred Year old and was ruined in XVIe century during the Wars of religion; it was rebuilt at the XIXe century within Gabriel Bréfeil. Of neo-gothic style its square bell-tower-turn shelters a bell gone back to 1594, carrying the Latin inscription Post will tenebras spero lucem, which means “After darkness, I await the light”; she recalls concerns of the Church during the Wars of religion.
