Etymology

ESCAMPS means the fields, the plain (in occitan the camps (locality spread on the commune)
Geography
the inhabitants of ESCAMPS are called " escampsois" , " escampsoise". Commune being located in the QUERCY.- ESCAMPS is located on causse of Limogne (a calcareous area), on an average altitude of 300 meters.
- ESCAMPS is located between Lalbenque and Limogne and has 22 km of CAHORS.
- ESCAMPS is located on a peak dominating a doline locally called " canaval" (basin has deep and rich ground, where was cultivated hemp from where the denomination " canaval") with presence of many wells.

History
- Cardaillac-Bioule then Besse-Laromiguières were the suzerains or middle-class family.

Village founded with the locality (remains of Dolmen) " cazals" close to NOUELLE or during the war to hundred-years, after English had attacked LALBENQUE. The inhabitants of ESCAMPS went to protect themselves in a fort which was used as advanced station to the lords of CONCOTS on the current site of the borough or the inhabitants developed their dwellings after the war.

the apogee of ESCAMPS arrives at the 19th century at the time of mining or one took phosphate, the populations of ESCAMPS counted more than 600 inhabitants.
The old keep was partly dismantled since all its upper part was demolished in order to recover the stones in order to build the schools and their residences. Schools which for summer have transformed into village hall and Town hall.

During the 20th century, ESCAMPS will know a turning into a desert due at the end of mining and the First World War.

Aujourd'hui the commune of ESCAMPS knows a rebirth with a renewal of population and activities. ESCAMPS counts today more than 150 inhabitants due to the renewal of activity generated in particular by the proximity of a20 highway.
