Escalafón

The escalafón (Spanish word meaning “hierarchy literally”) is the annual classification of the Matador S according to the number of Corrida S carried out (and thus of the number of fought bulls) and of the number of trophies obtained, in Spain, France and with the Portugal (for this last country, only entering in account bullfights with setting with dead), during one season ( temporada ).

Presentation

Just as the singer who sells the most discs is not inevitably the best singer, who the film which makes the most entry in the year is not inevitably the best film of the year, the matador at the head of the escalafón is not inevitably the best. The place of a matador is undoubtedly due to some extent to its talent, it is also due to some extent to the talent of sound Apoderado , to the good relationships that this one maintains with the hastened (“organizing of bullfights”), etc

With regard to the trophies deciding between the ex-aequo, they do not have all the same weight. Such matador attends primarily large the arena in which ears and tails weigh - in theory - very heavy; such other garners the trophies in arenas of villages or beaches where they are only of shoddy goods.

To try to establish a classification more representative of the quality of the matadors, unquestionable periodic two publish escalafones : one “general” taking account of all the fought bullfights and all the cut trophies, the other “restricted” holding account only bullfights carried out in arenas of first and second category. Thus in July 2006, “El Fandi” is number one to both escalafones ; “El Juli” eleventh only with the general escalafón , occupies the second place with the escalafón first and second categories; as for Díaz Handbook “El Cordobés”, tenth with general classification, it is found in… twenty-fifth position with the classification by categories.

This escalafón restricted undoubtedly reflects better the reality of the talents than the general escalafón . It must however be relativized: there exists many arenas of third category whose public is famous expert and in which the trophies weigh heavy; in certain arenas of first category, the trophies are as light as in an arena of seaside resort.

The escalafón has an importance with regard to the law the labor: according to the agreements between the trade unions of matadors and the trade unions of subordinates, when a matador took part in more forty-two bullfights during the same year, the following year it is obliged to engage - and to pay - a complete Cuadrilla for all the year; in the contrary case, its cuadrilla is committed - and paid - step by step. What explains why, at the end of the season, certain matadors close to forty contracts raise the foot in order to especially not exceed, for one or two bullfights only, the fateful number.
