The Eryx is a Missile French of self-defense anti-tank builds by MBDA.

It draws its name from the snake of sands of the desert considered for its agility.

Design

It was conceived to provide to the infantry a weapon of an effective range of 600 m vis-a-vis the new types of shielding. The schedule of conditions was ambitious, it stipulated that the system was to be simplest and most compact possible while being able to penetrate all the Blindage S in service in the years 2000. Moreover it was to have a high degree of accuracy, to be able to be drawn from a closed place, to weigh less than 12 kg and to have weak unit costs.

The series production started in 1991 and 2000 more 50  000 missiles and 3  500 stations of shooting were built.

In 1989, an agreement was concluded between the France and the Canada in order to produce Eryx in co-operation.

The Turkey expressed its intention to obtain the Eryx system for a contract of 450 million $ US on the condition of being able to produce a part of it locally. The negotiations were stopped by disorders

A similar model named Bumble-Bee, is in service in Serbia and with the Montenegro, it seems that is a copy not - authorized produced by the military technical Institute of the army of Serbia-Montenegro.

Description

The Eryx system consists of a missile of a diameter of 136 mm conditioned in a tube in which it is transported and stored while waiting to be used, and of a station of shooting gathering the measurement and detection, fusings. The missile can be set up and avoided to make fire in 5 seconds. During the flight of the missile (4,2 seconds for 600 m), the gunner must only keep the sight on the target. The missile carries a beacon Infrarouge which is collected by the station of shooting which calculates the drift and sendings the correction with the missile via a wire which is held behind the missile.

It is made especially nimble by an immediate application of the forces of ordering of trajectory closest to the Center of gravity, which enables him to react much more quickly than when the forces of control surfaces apply at the ends before or backs of the structure.

This one makes it possible the Eryx missile to very early counter after the shooting the disturbances of the tube of launching. The velocity emission of this tube is enough low to allow the shooting since an enclosure closed through a window for example, and consequently with discretion and of weak side disturbances on the initial trajectory. With launching the speed of the missile is of 18 m/s shortly after the acceleration of the engine propels the missile to 300 m/s.

The missile is in Autorotation and uses for its piloting only one control surface of jet, which makes its construction economic. It can be drawn from the shoulder or since a tripod.

Its system of treatment of the infra-red jammers and the power of its explosive load as a last resort ensure the defense of the infantryman isolated against the armoured tanks short range.

The last version of Eryx has a warhead out of tandem enabling him to cross 900 mm of shielding or 2,5 m of concrete.

A thermal imagor MIRABEL can be gone up on the station of shooting in order to allow his use of night or in the event of bad visibility. System MIRABEL is developed by a consortium between Thalès (ex-Thomson-CSF Optronique) and Allied Signal Aerospace Canada, it weighs 3,4 kg.
