Ertha Pascal-Trouillot
Ertha Pascal-Trouillot , born in 1943, is the first and the single woman who was Head of the State Haiti in, President Provisoire of Haiti of March 1990 to February 7th, 1991. It was the first also to organize democratic elections which carried to the capacity, Jean-Bertrand Aristide.
Political career
It became president of the Republic, on a purely temporary basis, the March 13rd 1990, three days after a Coup d'etat during which the general Hérard Abraham had reversed the government in place. The general had seized the power after street demonstrations have constrained the preceding president, Prosper April, to leave in exile. Discrete negotiations began quickly, which led the general putschist to voluntarily give the capacity to a civil authority, in the person of Ertha Pascal-Trouillot, which up to that point exerted the functions of president of the supreme court of Haiti. It should be noted that the Abraham general is the only example of Haitian putschist to have voluntarily restored the capacity with a civil authority, during the XXe century. The essence of its attendance time to the head of the country was devoted to maintain civil peace and to prepare the organization of a presidential election, the first which proceeded unconstrained in Haiti. The December 16th 1990, Jean-Bertrand Aristide gained the poll, with 67 % of the voices.
However, before the completion of the interim period, an coup attempt of State took place, in January 1991, during which Roger Lafontant failed to seize the capacity. But the Abraham general put his authority in the balance and ruined the coup attempt of State, allowing a free democratic transition, the February 7th 1991, between Ertha Pascal-Trouillot and Jean-Bertrand Aristide.
