Ernst Křenek , born with Vienna the August 23rd 1900 and died in Palm Springs the December 23rd 1991, was an Austrian type-setter .

Biography

More still than that of its contemporary Alexandre Tansman, his career was clearly divided into two by the Second world war. In the years 1928-1938, it is one of the alive type-setters most played thanks to its opera created in 1927, Johnny spielt auf which tell the history of the opposition between a traditional Violoniste and a violonist of Jazz.

However, as of the Anschluss, he is declared “artist degenerated” by the Nazis and emigrates with the the United States where he studies the medieval music and the serial music . Although there remains very prolific and composes until its death in the most various kinds, Ernst Křenek does not succeed in joining again with its celebrity of antan. During its American period, he is especially recognized as a pedagog and a musicologist, in particular by Glenn Gould.
