Ernesto Cardenal

Ernesto Cardenal (1925-) is a priest, a theologist, a poet and a known Nicaraguan politician for his role within the Théologie of the release.

Born in an easy family from Granada, he is the cousin of the literary critic Pablo Antonio Cuadra. He studied the literature in Managua and Mexico City of 1942 to 1946. He studied and travelled to Italy, to Spain, in the United States and to Switzerland of 1947 to 1950.

In 1950, at the time of its return to Nicaragua, it took part in the revolution of April against the government of Anastasio Somoza García. The coup d'etat failed and it had to be resigned to enter in the Trappists of Kntucky, who were then directed by Thomas Merton.

Cardenal was ordered catholic priest in 1965. It left towards the Îles Solentiname, where it founded a utopian monastic community. It composed there one entitled book El Evangelio de Solentiname in the thought of the current liberationnist. It militated actively with the Sandiniste S in rising against governement of Anastasio Somoza Debayle.

In 1979, after the fall of the government in place, it was named Minister for the culture in the government Sandinista. It occupied this station until 1987 when its ministry was closed for reason economic. He was criticized by the pope Jean-Paul II when this one visited Nicaragua in 1983, asking him to regularize his ecclesiastical ministry.

Carenal left the FSLN in 1994 while protesting against the authoritative direction of the president Daniel Ortega, while preserving its opinions gauchists. He is a member of the steering committee of the televised chain TeleSUR.
