Ernest of Saxony

Ernest of Saxony , born in Meissen the January 24th 1441, deceased the August 26th 1486 with Colditz.

Co-voter of Saxony, Count Palatine of Saxony, Co-margrave of Misnie of 1464 with 1485. Co-landgrave of Thuringe of 1482 with 1485. Voter of Saxony and count Count Palatine of Saxony, Landgrave of Thuringe of 1485 with 1486.

Ernest of Saxony married the November 19th 1460 Elisabeth of Bavaria (dead in 1484) girl of Albert III of Bavaria-Munich.

Seven children were born from this union:

At the time of the division of the grounds in 1485 Ernest of Saxony took Thuringe, Magdeburg and Saxony, his/her brother Albert III of Saxony took possession of Misnie and Osterland.

Ernest of Saxony is the founder of the branch Ernestine of the dynasty of the Wettin. Of this branch the Houses result from:

  • Saxony-Altenburg, whose first duke was Jean-Guillaume Ier of Saxony-Altenburg (1562 - 1602)

  • Saxony-Cobourg-Gotha, the first duke of the line of Saxony-Cobourg-Gotha was Ernest Ier of Saxony-Gotha (1601-1675), it founded the second branch of the house of Wettin
