the very honourable Ernest Lapointe , C.P. (October 6th 1876 - November 26th 1941) was a Canadian politician . He was initially elected with the House of Commons of Canada in an election of 1898 as a liberal deputy .
In 1921, William Lyon Mackenzie King names Lapointe with the Canadian Cabinet as a Minister for the marine and the fisheries. In 1924, he became the Minister for justice and he preserved this station in several liberal cabinets until his death in 1941. Lapointe was useful as a Québécois political lieutenant and was one of the most influential Ministers for the cabinet. It led the Canadian delegation the imperial Conférence of 1926 which led to the signature of the declaration Balfour which raised the statute of the dominions with equality with the the United Kingdom and which possibly led to the Statut of Westminster of 1931.
At the end of the Years 1930, Lapointe cancelled certain laws voted by the Parti social Credit of Alberta of William Aberhart. It however did not carry its veto to the Loi of the lock of Maurice Duplessis because it did not want to enter in conflict with the government of the National union.
Lapointe helped Mackenzie King to write its policy against the conscription for the service overseas in 1939 and its electoral campaign helped to beat the Duplessis government in 1939.
His/her son, the politician Hugues Lapointe, in particular was Lieutenant-governor of Quebec.
Various facts:
- At the time of Lapointe, the liberal party formed only one whole, on the provincial scene federal and scenes. Lapointe, by its influence and its prestige, was very indicated to control the businesses of the party in Quebec. It is him which tried (in vain) to replace Louis-Alexandre Taschereau by Adélard Godbout, before the party would not be to lead to the ruin.
- At an assembly partisane at the time of the election of 1939, where Ernest Lapointe will coopéra with Godbout, a journalist of the radio of State approaches the man and asks him " Which is your opinion on Maurice Duplessis And Lapointe to answer Duplessis? A cossack fanfarronnat in ennuyant"
