Ernest Jacques Barbot

Biography

Ernest Jacques Barbot is born on August 19th, 1855 with Toulouse . It Marie on May 10th, 1892 with a widow of officer who will make him a son. Its states of services specify that it entered at 20 years as raises at the military special School from where it leaves second lieutenant (October 1st, 1877). He becomes then captain on December 30th, 1887. He was 34e on 74 at the exit of the military academy. He is then named major on March 2nd, 1898 then colonel on September 24th, 1912 and, to finish, brigadier general on September 8th, 1914. He was mentioned with the Ordre of the army on October 10th, 1914 for the following reason:
“With the combat of October 2nd this general officer has, by his energy and its beautiful behavior with fire, maintained the troop under a fire violent and restored the situation in difficult circumstances. ”
Wounded in the combat of Souchez on May 10th, 1915, he dies because of his wounds, at the time of the way towards the hospital. He is named commander of the Légion of honor on a purely posthumous basis. He rests with his soldiers in the national cemetery of Notre-Dame de Lorette. He gave his name to a college with Metz.

Monument with its glory

With Souchez a statue of the general to the head of his soldiers is. It was set up in May 1937. It was inaugurated in front of more than 50.000 people including one most of former soldiers. Located at approximately 100 meters of the place where the general was killed, it is the work of Jules Dechin (Grand Prix of Rome) and of its son architect (Pierre Déchin).
