Ernest Ier of Saxony-Gotha
Ernest 1st of Saxony-Gotha says “the Piles”, (born on December 25th, 1601 with Altenbourg, dead on March 26th, 1675 with Gotha), was duke of Saxony-Gotha of 1640 to 1675 and duke of Saxony-Altenbourg by marriage. He is the son of Jean II of Saxony-Weimar and Dorothée of Palatinat.
He belongs to the second branch, itself resulting from the branch Ernestine of the Maison of Wettin. He is the founder of the line of the Saxony-Gotha become Saxony-Gotha-Altenbourg in 1732 this branch died out in 1825.
Into 1644 the duchy of Saxony-Weimar was divided into two lines: the Saxony-Weimar and the Saxony-Gotha.

Ernest 1st of Saxony-Gotha married in 1636 Elisabeth of Saxony-Altenbourg (dead in 1680).Eighteen children were born from this union:
- Elisabeth of Saxony-Gotha (1640 - 1709), in 1666 it married the Landgrave Louis VI of Hesse-Darmstadt (1630 - 1678)

- Bernard {{Ier}} of Saxony-Meiningen, duke of Saxony-Meiningen, it belonged the third branch of the House of Wettin.
- Henri of Saxony-Rolmhild (1650 - 1710), duke of Saxony-Rolmhild, in 1676 it married Elisabeth of Hesse-Darmstadt (dead in 1715), girl of the landgrave Louis IV of Hesse-Darmstadt.
- Christian of Saxony-Eisenberg, duke of Saxony-Eisenberg (1653 - 1707), in 1677 it married Christiane of Saxony-Merseburg (dead in 1679), (posterity), widower it married in 1681 Sophie of Hesse-Darmstadt (dead in 1712), (girl of the landgrave Louis VI of Hesse-Darmstadt)
