Ernest Gabard

Ernest Gabard was born with Pau on May 19th, 1879 and deceased in Pau on April 7th, 1957. It is a Sculpteur and painter in watercolours French.

Biography

Very young person it loses his parents. Orphan, it is, with his brother and his sisters, collected and raised by his uncle and his aunt. At 17 years, it leaves Béarn to follow the courses of the School of the Art schools, with Paris. He is the pupil of Gabriel-Jules Thomas and follows the courses of anatomy of Cuyer. He attends also the workshop of Auguste Rodin without however being one of his executants. Disappointed by Parisian life it decides to return to live and work in Pau.

Works

Several of its works decorate the town of Pau: the Fountain with the Children on the boulevard of the Pyrenees, the Woman with the Well of the street Henri Pheasants.

He invents, with humor, a character of Cartoon before the hour, the Caddetou , a peasant inhabitant of Béarn, crafty beggar and picturesque, capped of a beret, fitted shoes, with a broad blouse and his umbrella.

Impassioned aviation, it realizes in this context of the posters, statuettes, cuts and trophies.

It is also implied in the religious art, its way of cross of the Notre-Dame church of Pau is famous.

It is mobilized during the war 1914 - 1918. Sergeant with 270e R.I., it carries out 42 watercolours there on a notebook evoking the life with the face in Argonne the day before the battle of Verdun.

After the war this patriot carries out about fifteen war memorials in his area. These humanistic monuments takes part in the pacifist vision on the war: whining with Assat and Sauveterre-with-Béarn, scenes of meditation to Jurançon, Monein, Dax, Igon and Mauléon-Licharre, failing soldier with Pontacq….
