Ernest Deproge
Louis-Joseph Ernest Deproge , born on August 15th, 1850 with Fort-de-France (Martinique), and deceased on December 15th, 1921 with Sanvic (Seine-Maritime), was a lawyer and deputy of Martinique of 1882 with 1898.
Biography
After its primary schooling carried out in Fort-de-France, Ernest Deproge leaves for France and is registered with the college of Rouen where it obtains its baccalaureat. It then starts studies of right to Paris. The war of 1870 the constrained one to give up its studies temporarily to take share with the engagements. The finished war, it resumes its academic works and obtains its License in right. Its diploma out of pocket, Ernest Deproge regains Martinique and exerts its lawyer trade. As of its beginnings, it is essential like an uncontested Master of the word and assoit its popularity in the chief town and the south of Martinique.
It is interested in the policy and begins its career in 1882 while being made elect appointed of Martinique. It sits at the House of Commons in the rows of the Extreme left whose leader is Georges Clémenceau. As from 1882, Ernest Deproge is with Marius Hurard, leader of the Republican party in Martinique. They belong to the class of the Mulâtre S which represents the intellectual Bourgeoisie of the colony. It is the republic, starting from 1870, which granted new rights to them of which the Vote for all, the Freedom of the press, the public school, public and obligatory. From now on, there is an identification of these men to the republic. They set a goal: to prove their capacity to be managed, with being citizens like the others which know the same rights and the same duties as the citizen S of France. It is a total assimilation in France that Ernest Deproge and Marius Hurard assert from now on. They will be opposed in particular to the Béké creole S or white which are them in favor of autonomy compared to France.
In 1885, major dissensions and competitions as deprogists and hurardists cause the bursting of the Republican party. The camp of Ernest Deproge shows Marius Hurard of collusion with the clan Béké. From now on, the two great figures of the political life of Martinique of the end of the XIXe century each one will create their political own party. Ernest Deproge founds the Socialist Radical party Inhabitant of Martinique or Republican Union and Marius Hurard create the Republican party Progressist and operate a bringing together with the békés separatists.
Ernest Deproge contrary with Marius Hurard will remain a savage defender of the total assimilation in France. It creates a newspaper Small France to diffuse its ideas assimilationnists. In 1898, Ernest Deproge is presented to legislative and is beaten by Osman Duquesnay.
At 48 years, Ernest Deproge definitively leaves the political life and Martinique. He becomes bank manager of the Meeting then of various perceptions of France. But a cruel disease afflicts it and a paralysis condemns it to quasi an immobility. He dies on December 15th, 1921 with Sanvic (Seine-Maritime) at age 71 of years.
In homage to Ernest Deproge, a street of the downtown area of Fort de France bears the name of this great political figure inhabitant of Martinique.
