Erik Mongrain

Erik Mongrain (born on April 12th, 1980 with Montreal, Quebec, Canada) is a Guitariste and Compositeur. Recognized for its original acoustic style, it exploits a technique of Tapping with two hands on electroacoustic Guitare.

Biographical elements

At the fourteen years age, Mongrain exchanges its taste of the sport for a Electric guitar. He listens to then groups and artists rock'n'roll such as Metallica, Jimi Hendrix, Kurt Cobain. Then he discovers the work of Bach; during four years, he learns the rudiments from the Solfège in Autodidacte and composes his own acoustic works. The three artists having influenced it more are, according to Mongrain itself, Michael Hedges, Preston Reed and Don Ross.

During this period, it tries out the technical complex of the Lap-tapping , which consists in playing the guitar posed on the knees, the two hands realizing alternatively or at the same time melodies and rhythmic in Tapping . By using this method, it composes its first parts, of which the most known, AirTap! . With blackjack years, it is initially in the subway and the street of Montreal that it makes its first classes in front of public: with the Square St-Louis, Park Lafontaine and annually around the site of the International festival of jazz of Montreal and each time a crowd surrounds it; tens of fans give each other appointment where Erik with the practice to play.

It leaves then travels from there with its backpack and its guitar towards the the United States, then in Europe. To Grenade (Spain), a journalist impressed by his technique and its talent spontaneously devotes to him an article in the newspaper Granada . Consequently, one invites it to play on scene, in festivals and on television.

Mongrain takes part in the French popular emission “One Sunday evening with…” by accompanying Lynda Lemay with the guitar. A work of collaboration settles then between Mongrain and the Québécois singer; it composes the music of certain parts for its next album. A few months later, it is invited to the television program “rotted of talent” diffused on the waves of Music More, where it are noticed by Serge Fiori, former member and founder of Québécois the worship group Harmonium. Fiori is delayed with arrangements and Co-writing the part I Am Not , of the future album of Mongrain, Fates .

It is at this period that vidéos in concerts are diffused on the platform of exchange YouTube, which contributes largely to the emergence of its world success. Current work

In March 2007 is diffused on Internet its first album Fates , whose physical exit is announced for June 2007 (May for Japan). In addition to to have composed the musical screen for the young French documentarist Pierre Dejon and his film With listening of the wolf , Mongrain also takes part in the musical production of the film Everest Peace Project of Lance Trumbull, an international documentary project for peace endorsed by the Dalaï Lama.

Recently, Erik is invited to the first of the Japanese emission “ World Music Heritage ”, animated by the famous duet Gontiti and which will take the poster on the Japanese domestic network (NHK) in May 2007.
