Erich Honecker
Erich Honecker (* August 25th 1912 with Neunkirchen (the Saar) - May 29th 1994 with the Chile) directed the German Democratic republic of 1971 to 1989.
It follows a formation of Couvreur, joined Communist youths of Germany in 1926 and adheres to KPD (Communist party) in 1929. He is senior official starting from 1930.
After the seizure of power by the Nazis, he works hidden, is imprisoned in 1935 and is condemned in 1937 to 10 years of penitentiary. He is released from the penitentiary of Brandebourg in 1945 and is charged to found the organization Freie Deutsche Jugend ( free Jeunesse of Germany , Communist in GDR) of which he will be the chief of 1946 with 1955. From 1946 he is member of the direction of the party SED (Communist party of GDR) and more particularly of the Central committee. Of 1950 with 1958 it is candidate , then as from 1958 member of the Political office and Secrétariat of the Central committee to the Questions of security.
From May 1971 it replaces Walter Ulbricht at the station of First Secretary of the Central committee . In June it is named president of the National council of Defense and in November he is member of the Council of State, of which he becomes the chief in October 1976 after its position in the Party is renamed " Général" secretary;. He then cumulates the functions of chief of the party (SED) and of the State.
From 1979 it is invested obviously in the East-West crisis not to let the international tensions deteriorate the relations FRG - GDR. Besides it is constant in this action by the West German chancellors Helmut Schmidt and Helmut Kohl, this last receiving it at the time of an official visit with Bonn in 1987.
At the time of the peaceful revolution in GDR, Honecker, which had always clung to its positions antireformists, is replaced at the posts of General secretary SED and President of the Council of State in October 1989. It is excluded from the party, is the subject of complaints and makes a short stay in prison. In 1990 it puts under the protection of the Soviet Armée and flees with Moscow. After its expulsion by Moscow in 1992 it is in detention pending trial with Berlin for murder (shots drawn from the Berlin Wall). To the beginning of the year 1993 it leaves prison for health reasons and can flee with its family with the Chile, where it dies the May 29th 1994.
