Pierre-André Taguieff (born on August 4th 1946 with Paris) is a philosophical , political economist and historian of the ideas French. He is research director with CNRS (CEVIPOF) attached to the Research center policies of Sciences Po, he teaches with the Institut of political studies of Paris. Member of the think tank the Circle of the Oratory, he is also member of the editorial board of the review of the circle Brave New World and member of the editorial board of the review Of the Laws and the Men .
Taguieff is the author of many works touching at the same time with the fields of the Politique, the Histoire of the ideas, the Sociologie and of the theory of the Argumentation. Worried in particular by the questions of the Racism, the Anti-semitism and the ideologies of Extreme right-hand side, it was made known by its work pioneers on the populism, the “Nouvelle right-hand side” and the National front.
Committed thinker and readily polemist, his course hétérodoxe goes from “the anarchist - Situationnisme to the patriotic chevenementism of the Fondation of March 2nd”. Asserting ideas of the Republican left, also described like a “preserving social liberal”, his standpoint and its work (in particular on the “New line” and the “news Judéophobie”) sometimes were the subject of mediatized controversies. Taguieff is the defender of a critical step which saves neither the antiracism nor the Antifascisme and it was always engaged in the fight “against all racisms” which, according to him, requires as a preliminary a rigorous reflection and an unambiguous definition of the involved stakes.
Biographical elements
Born from a Russian father and a mother of Polish origin , Taguieff was very early impassioned by the Culture Juive (musical, in particular), although not being Juif itself as it declared publicly on several occasions. If his/her parents are Jewish neither one nor the other, on the other hand, “all the family friends, were Jews of Eastern Europe, marked by the experiment Nazi”. In the Years 1960, it continues studies of Philosophie and Linguistique to the Faculté of Nanterre. It is then militant Gauchiste near to the Situationniste S, in particular of Rene Viénet; in parallel, he is also pianist of Jazz. During this period, it is initiated with the Phénoménologie while following the courses of Jean-François Lyotard, Emmanuel Levinas, Paul Ricoeur and Mikel Dufrenne, then it is filled with enthusiasm for the thought of Gilles Deleuze and Nietzsche on which will carry its first research. Via the philosopher and semiotician Marine Louis of which he admired the rigor and the scholarship, Taguieff continues its studies in linguistics and Sémiotique under the direction of Algirdas Julien Greimas.
During the years 1970, it militates in several movements antiracists like the Mouvement against racism and for the friendship between the people (MRAP), the international Ligue against racism and the anti-semitism (LICRA) and the Ligue of the human rights. In 1972, he becomes professor of philosophy to the college, then in teacher training school teachers. Towards the end of the year 1970, it starts to study the Nouvelle Right-hand side and it is interested in the course of its leader Alain de Benoist. From 1978 to 1984, it occupies a station of part-time lecturer in general psychology to the Université Paris VII. It enters then to CNRS in 1984 after having collaborated in the laboratory " Lexicostatistics and texts politiques" research center as from 1980. He also teaches with the international Collège of philosophy. Its first articles on the New Line and the National front are published in various reviews.
As from 1985, he is member of the editorial board of Politica hermetica (founded by the historian Victor Nguyen) with, in particular, the sociologist and historian Emile Poulat. Its first works “not militant”, the Force of the prejudice , appears in 1988. This attempt to think racism with its opposite (antiracism) and philosophically to propose a critic of this last for the refonder caused as many supports as of dissensions. But the idea to reconsider the concept of racism with more moderate concepts gave new results and stimulated the reflection on the question of the antiracism and owing to the fact that this ideology borrows in spite of it elements from that which it claims to fight. During this period, Taguieff directs the collection “History of the ideas, political theory and research in social sciences” with the editions Kimé, at the same time as it codirige with the linguist and theorist of the argumentation Christian Plantin the collection “Argumentation, Sciences of the language” at the same publisher.
In 1989, Jean-Christophe Cambadélis takes as a starting point its analyzes when it launches “Proclamation against the National-populisme” (expression introduced by Gino Germani which is taken again and popularized by Taguieff to indicate the National front). In parallel, S.O.S-Racism entrusts the presidency of their to him Observatoire of the anti-semitism whose objective was to count and to analyze the anti-semites activities in France. In 1991, he becomes the official analyst of the annual report of the National advisory commission of the human rights for what concerns the fight against racism and the Xénophobie. During this period, it starts to direct the political Thought collection “and social sciences” of the Éditions Berg International.
From 1994 to 1995, Taguieff is titular pulpit Chaïm Perelman of the Perelman Center of philosophy of the right of the Universit3e libre de Bruxelles). Thereafter, he teaches with the École of the high studies in social sciences like with the Institut of political studies of Paris (higher cycle). In 1999, it counts among the founding members of the Think republican tank the Fondation of March 2nd (Marc-Bloch ex-Foundation) which it chairs of 2001 to 2003. He becomes also political adviser of Jean-Pierre Chevènement of which he will distanciera himself as from 2003.
In 2002, it counts among the experts of the commission Négationnisme in Lyon III (created by the Minister for Education Jack Lang and directed by the historian Henry Rousso). This one aimed to inquire into various events or judged remarks negationnists reproached certain students and professors of the faculty of Lyon III. This nomination did not achieve the unanimity and made the object of criticism of the share in particular of the writer Didier Daeninckx and S.O.S Racism which had however had recourse to the expertise of Taguieff during the creation of the Observatory of the anti-semitism.
March 18th, 2004, Taguieff is charged to submit an official report on the anti-semitism in the French public schools by the ministers Luc Ferry and Jean-Louis Borloo. Also To advise Representative council of the Jewish institutions of France (CRIF) and member of the Association citizen for the Middle East (ACPRO), it signs with other intellectuals and artists such Alain Finkielkraut, Jacques Julliard, the former minister Bernard Kouchner, the journalist Ghaleb Bencheikh and the scenario writer Elie Chouraqui a discussed call.
At the same time critical of the left and the right and itself criticized by representatives of the two camps, Taguieff defends a position which it names “meliorist” and which it describes in these terms: “The liberal democracy is certainly not perfect, but it is perfectible, it is even the only political system with the being. It must be defended because it is the only type of political organization guaranteeing to the individuals their freedom to act and to think”. Cete idea of “meliorism” or, according to a more paradoxical formulation, of “critical conservatism” was developed in the conclusion of its work on the Sens of progress (2004) and in a article published in the Québécois review Égards from which the preserving leading line and Catholique Traditionaliste seem very distant from its ideas. But that does not have anything astonishing since Taguieff was always in favor of a policy of the “dialog”, which had been worth to him criticisms at the time of publications in reviews of the “New right-hand side” like Éléments or Krisis .
The leading line of the review Brave New World (re-examined) (editions Denoël) where he is currently contributor and member of the drafting team, corresponds better to its intransigent standpoint towards the utopisms. the Against-reactionaries (2007) account among the publications associated with this review which rejects “old the political myths” and utopian to try to clearly see in “Brave New World possible”, that which is, i.e. “the only one which is”.
Work
In the whole of its work, Taguieff forged a particular academic style. Extremely documented, its work is characterized by the considerable number of references and a great bibliographical rigor. Near to max Weber on the methodological level, Taguieff regularly has recourse to the concept of the ideal type ( Idealtype ) and does not hesitate to forge concepts by introducing several Néologisme S and by creating made up words (Hétérophilie, Hétérophobie, judéophobie, national-populisme, against-reactionary, etc). Its analyzes propose typological models which try to encircle different the facets from the phenomena studied through a comparative method . From the point of view comparable with that initiated by the German sociologist Ulrich Beck, Taguieff refuses any form of “methodological nationalism”.Its analyzes exceed the national framework which characterizes the majority of work of the historians to see how a political style like the populism, for example, can take form in different Contexte S and adapt according to the sociopolitic configurations specific to distinct political spaces as much in space that in time. Sensitive to the approach known as “realistic” of Weber or Julien Freund, Taguieff places the conflictuality and the Polémique in the middle of its reflection, challenging by there the approaches resting on presupposed progressists too often captive of the executives of the Philosophie of the history, resulting from the Lumières or Marxisme. It distancie of the Other-worldliness which characterizes sometimes this type of method, which is likely, in his opinion, to compromise the Objectivité analysis.
On the New Line
As from 1967-1968, Taguieff had been devoted to studies of reception of the work of Nietzsche and to its Instrumentalisation at the 20th century by the pangermanists and the Nazi S. This research on the uses and the multiple heritages of the nietzscheism leads it to be interested in the Nouvelle Right-hand side which made much discuss at the end of the years 1970, after in particular the publication very mediatized the collection articles Alain de Benoist entitled Vu right-hand side (1977). The leader of the movement néo-droitier had set up the author of the Généalogie of morals “as a prophet of the inegalitarism and the antijudeochristianism”. Thus, during the years 1980, Taguieff devotes some articles on this intellectual line and its leader, at the same time as it publishes several articles on the national-populisme and racism “differentialist” whom it observes in the publications of the GREECE.In 1993, Taguieff was wrongfully shown by Roger-pol. Right in Le Monde of “vulgarizing of the Extrême right-hand side” and of lack of “vigiliance” because one of its texts was published (in a collection where also the names of Alain de Benoist and André Béjin appear) in translation Italian in a publisher directed by Marco Tarchi, leader of the “New right-hand side” in Italy. What Le Monde omitted to specify is that the litigious text was actually “an unauthorized hacking” by the author. This denunciation was also explained owing to the fact that Taguieff had attended militants of the “New right-hand side” of Alain de Benoist within the framework of its work and had published articles in reviews of the movement ( Éléments , Krisis ) at the sides of others Intellectuel S especially of left which, with the eyes of “vigilant” should have abstained from: Jacques Julliard, Serge Latouche, Alain Caillé, Ignacio Ramonet, etc
This attack made following a Appel with vigilance (also published in Le Monde ) signed by several intellectuals and academics of fame, without however that the name of Taguieff is not reproduced on the text of the call. A against-petition of support for Taguieff is then launched on the initiative of Patrick Weil where a series of researchers and colleagues denounce the “conformism” of the first petition by pointing out the difficulty in working on “hot subjects” and the risks which this research can involve. In the Nouvel Observateur , Jacques Julliard denounces, “the campaign conducted by Le Monde against Pierre-André Taguieff”, qualifying it literally “shame”. The debate continued in particular with interventions of Pierre Vidal-Naquet which is not astonished that Taguieff was made “trap”, although he reiterates his support to him. Taguieff itself refutes the allegations of Roger-pol. Right and Alain de Benoist speaks to indicate the event like “a quarrel of Old mode”.
Populism, anti-semitism, racism and antiracism
Dissatisfied of the concept of “Extreme right-hand side” that it finds too polemic, it proposes an analysis of the Front National by making saving in this concept, rather proposing that of “National-populisme” which will know a certain fortune in later work on the party of Jean-Marie Le Pen. This research is also accompanied by an opposition (which it expressed publicly on several occasions) with the " ethno- Nationalism " FN and with its positions on the Immigration. In parallel, Taguieff is interested in particular in the Ressentiment and the decadentism as represented by catholics Traditionaliste S-nationalists like Jean Madiran or Romain Marie.
Very solicited by the question of the Anti-semitism and by work of the historian Leon Poliakov whom he regards as his Master ( the Color and blood which appears in 2002 is dedicated to the memory of this last), Taguieff devoted a bulky study racism (the Force of the prejudice) as well as an analysis of the Protocoles of Wise of Sion , a famous forgery anti-semite written by a policeman tsarist (Okhrana) at the beginning of the 20th century. Thereafter, it continues its research on the question of the Racisme and the Anti-racisme, trying to give a detailed typology of these concepts. Following the example work of Poliakov and Norman Cohn - whose Taguieff is also asserted - its research is characterized by the recourse to a considerable documentation and systematic references to the sources even if it means to overload its work of an apparatus of tiresome notes.
It is by making profitable such a method that it goes back to the origins of racism in France to question its " sources; scientifiques". On the basis of work of Gobineau and certain theorists heirs to the social Darwinism, Taguieff shows how racism was rationalized and drew its legitimacy from certain erudite speeches of " type; anthropo-sociologiques" like those of Cowherd of Lapouge and Gustave the Good.
Typology of racisms
These analyzes distiguent two forms distinct from racism exposed in details in the Force of the prejudice (1987):-
* On the one hand, a racism “hétérophobe”, “pseudo-universalist”, who rejects the difference and claims to compare to a single Identité the groups wanting to preserve their differences. This racism is based on an uneven logic , and bases its categories on the somatic characters (color of the skin, cuts, the shape of cranium, etc) of the individuals.
-
* In addition, a racism “hétérophile”, which preaches particularism, and intends to preserve
Consequently, these two racisms call two symmetrical antiracisms. To racism hétérophobe, an antiracism “differentialist”, related to the cultural Relativisme is opposed. He preaches equalizes it recognition of the various cultures. To racism “hétérophile” and “mixophobe”, are opposed to an antiracism universalist of content “assimilationnist”, who pleads for the mixture of the cultures and the universality of the human values.
Theories of the plot
Its last research just as its former analyzes of the Protocoles of Wise of Sion leads it to be interested more closely in the Théories of the plot. This research field gives place to the publication of two works ( the Fair with Enlightened the , 2005; the Imaginary one of the world plot , 2006) recalling the history of the complotism and its demonstrations esoterists, Antimaçonnique S and anti-semites. It shows that these theories which were hitherto the prerogative of the ideologies of extreme right-hand side are transformed with the favor in particular new forms of Communication.
Enjoying a great accessibility on Internet and taken again by certain cultural products of mass like the video games and certain successful films, they answer today a request for direction because they provide total explanations of the world. Under consideration in the optics of the " Disenchantment of the world " , the theories of the plot are registered, according to Taguieff, from the point of view of “réenchantement for the world”, according to the expression of Peter Berger, and take part of a reconfiguration of the Croyance S and of a Sublimation of the monk in a form secularized.
Controversies: “New reactionary” and “New judéophobie”
“New reactionaries”
Today, in addition to these key questions, its work also concerns the Nationalisme, to become to it République and on the Utopie of the Progrès. In 2002, Taguieff was described as " new réactionnaire" in a Lampoon of Daniel Lindenberg ( the Call to order ). Pierre-André Taguieff observes that Lindenberg does not take the trouble to discuss the theses of thinkers such as Pierre Manent, Marcel Gauchet, Alain Finkielkraut, Alain Besancon, Shmuel Trigano, Jean-Claude Milner or Alain Badiou and is satisfied to arbitrarily pin names on its black list. Actually, these “Nouveaux réacs” has few joint things; the majority of them do not share the same political ideas and come from very different fields of research and disciplines.
In 2007, the label Polémique of “new reactionary” that Daniel Lindenberg had joined to him gives to Taguieff the pretext of a new work on what it names the “against-reactionaries”. This work joins again with its work on the idea of progress and registers the political concept of reaction within the framework of the system Progressiste, context in which the term of " réactionnaire" find its direction with the profit of an inversion axiologic. Finding these “against-reactionaries” in the history of the 20th century, Taguieff in trace a portrait which concerns a double posture: that of the concerned researcher of his references and that of the polemist.
“New judéophobie”
Anxious of the resurgence of a new anti-semitism which, according to him, is often dissimulated under the mask of the radical Antisionisme, it devoted two works to this question ( the news judéophobie 2002; Preachers of hatred , 2004) where it analyzes the sales leaflet anti-semite and defends the thesis of a filiation between the Soviet Antisionisme of the years 1970 and the contemporary Islamisme.
Taguieff was shown by several French associations implied in the israélo-Palestinian conflict to stigmatize the Anti-Zionism like Antisémitisme. Others reproach him its Sionisme and reproach him for writing lampoons of propaganda and misinformation.
Thus in 2003, a controversial text, “the new Community intellectuals”, Islam Swiss ologist Tariq Ramadan the met causes some by evoking “Jewish intellectuals” (whereas Taguieff is not it) holding of the Israeli positions pro . Following the publication of this text, main concern denounced the political footbridges existing according to him enters islamist and altermondialists, which would have been spread with the European Social forum or in hostile demonstrations with the war in Iraq.
In 2005, Guillaume Weill-Raynal ( an imaginary hatred? Against investigation into the “new anti-semitism” , Armand Colin, Paris, 2005) and Thomas Deltombe ( Imaginary Islam: The media construction of the islamophobie in France 1975-2005 , the Discovery, Paris, 2005) underline the amalgams, generalizations, the anachronisms and the slips present - according to them - in the News Judéophobie , they also denounce what they name the “sophism of Taguieff” according to which the French media are judéophobes because they precisely persist in denying it.
