Ereshkigal

In cosmogony sumérienne, it is taken along to the hells against its liking by Kur after the separation of the Sky of the Earth. It is often exaltée in the songs, and its name means “Lady of the large country”, “Rams great Medium”, or “Rams great place”.
Its most important temples were with Kutha and Sippar.

One day, Nergal to him was sent Sky with an offering of food. They fell in love, and when it had to leave, it was in tears. She threatened Anu that if Nergal were not returned to him immediately to become her husband, she ressusciterait all deaths, “which will be more numerous than the alive ones”. Its prédicant, Namtar, had to go to the Sky like its messenger, because Ereshkigal was thought already pregnant. Lastly, Nergal descends the staircase, breaks the seven doors, enters the palate of the hells… and embraces it “to clean its tears”.
